Measuring Angles and Bearings
Lesson Content Notes
1 Measure activity An actvity to review some language etc in measure and shape.
2-4

Acute, Obtuse, Reflex.

Estmating and measuring angles.

Bearings.

Types. Quick whole-class revision of acute/obtuse/reflex/

Angles provides a board tool to demonstrate estimating/measuring (but not reflex).

Bearings match-up cards. Group activity

Bearings and scale drawings

The following can be organized as a circus of activities. Some require a computer. I have NOT checked that they work on a Chromebook. Please let me know which do/don't.:

Pentagram. Measure (accurately) every angle!

Banana Hunt online game gives estimation practice, but not reflex. Students should probably know the basic 90, 180 first.

Kung Fu Angles online game. More practice, including reflex

Bearings game. Online game.

Zombie bearings. Drawing exercise.

Paper Protractor

Angle Geometry
Lesson Content Notes
1-5

Beta (Old version) Chapters 9 and 11.

Matching cards for angle facts

Angle facts. Notes template (revision task)

This is too much text book. I would like to replace this with some more investigative work (eg Geogebra)

Right Angle Triangles
Lesson Content Notes
1-4

Pythagoras

Beta (old version) p 259 to 267.

Especially for the later examples, encourage students to draw a diagram.

5-8 Height of a tree
  1. Estimate the height of a tree
  2. Use clinometer and scale drawing to find the height
  3. Introduce trigonometry (see below)
  4. Find height of tree by trigonometry

Draw 5 right angle triangles each with an angle of 30 degrees. Indicate opposite and adjacent sides.

Calculate opp/adjacent for each one and tabulate. Answer should be ~0.6. Explain that this is because the triangles are similar.

Try 60 degrees.

Can you predict the result for 45 degrees? Call this number Tangent (angle). Show how to find on the calculator. Relate back to the tree problem, and solve.

Using the original triangles, tabulate for opp/hyp and adj/hyp as well, and name these ratios. Introduce sin and cos and the formulas. SOHCAHTOA.

9-15

Beta (old) p. 274-287

p. 290
p. 292-294
p. 297-300

Skateboard problem for those who need no revision (nice as a discussion/group activity).

Please emphasise the use of algebra to rearrange!

Revision: Treasure Hunt

Instructions:

  • Print out the cards, cut them up and stick them around the classroom
  • Pupils select the colour they will follow, amber has more support and green has more challenge
  • Pupils choose a ticket to start at and answer the ‘question’ on that ticket
  • They write down the answer
  • To find the next question they have to ‘hunt’ for the ticket with their ‘answer’ at the top.
  • Continue until they get back to the ticket where they started (should have 10 answers at this point)
  • Check the answers .
