Probability

Introduction to Probability
Lesson Content Notes
The Probability Line

“The Probability line” – give out the cards. Get students with 0, 0.5 and 1 to stand apart across the front. Discuss the descriptors (impossible, unlikely etc) and get the students with those cards to stand across the room. Discuss where the events (“It will snow tomorrow” etc) should stand.

Drawing pin experiment: What is the probability that a pin dropped on the floor will land point up/point down.

Draw bar chart ("discrete data") and calculate relative frequency (introduce this vocabulary).

Experiments and Equally Likely Outcomes
Shape Cards   Comparing experimental and theoretical probability. Perform an expt with one dice. Tally chart/bar chart. Discuss expected results, and how many trials are sensible. Compare relative frequency with expected results. Repeat with “Shape Cards” (copy onto card), with replacement. Discuss at length theoretical probability, and compare with relative frequency.
Two Dice and Sample Space Diagrams
Barchart with two dice   Predict the outcomes (introduce sample space diagram), and then perform the experiment.

Two Way Tables
Construct and interpret two way tables

The powerpoint presentation gives an overview.
Slide 2 introduces the matching card activity, and slide 3 gives the answers.
Slide 4 is a teacher-given example
Slide 5 is an example for students to complete
Slides 6-11 Introduce using tables to answer probability questions
Slide 12 Intoduces the worksheet and slide 13 gives the answers
The other slides deal with creating 2-way tables, and could be developed as an extension resource.
